THE FIKA PROJEKT: Eating the gigantic KANELBULLE of Haga

THE FIKA PROJECT: PART TWO

In our attempt to try and mastering the art of Fika in Gothenburg, we were bound to cross paths with this famous mutated baked good at some point.

The concept is really simple - you take the typical Swedish cinnamon bun and make it about 4-5 times bigger. When we started The Fika Project, Felicia pitched ideas on what to eat and where to Julia and Jonas, and when she said "..Oh, and so the gigantic kanelbulle in Haga, naturally..." Jonas admitted He. Had. Never. Been. In. Haga.

THAT WAS THE UTTEREST FORM OF DISGRACE TO YOUR GOTHENBURGIAN HERRITAGE,
Julia and Felicia thought and off course also told him so, and the next stop on the Fika-map was set.

Although many places in the Haga area sell the gigantic cinnamon bun, or Hagabullen, as it is most usually called, it was the café Husaren that came up with the idea in the 80's.

In the early ages, the acient men were breaking kanelbulle as a gesture to show their good will, but also, secretly, it was a contest to show off how much bulle they could handle in front of the Axelsson sisters, as both sisters were unimpressed by men that picked in their food.

Haga is on almost every Gothenburgian to-do-list, with its cosy cobble streets and turn of the century buildings that provides a good introduction if you are new to the city. If you are in the search for quirky boutiques or exclusive hipster food, this is the area to look in.

CLOSEST TRAM STOP:
Järntorget or Hagakyrkan

BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Many cafés in Haga is really crowded around lunch hours. We visited Husaren at 2 p.m a friday afternoon which turned out to be a stroke of luck, as people were still in school or work and many tables were empty. Try and catch a fika around 14-17 to minimize queing time and table scouting.

BEST SEASON TO VISIT:
In Gothenburg, early spring is still too cold for sitting outside on the patios, but as soon as the temperature rises you will love being in the middle of this cool, artistic vibe that fills the streets.

In Christmas times, the walking streets turns in to a market which turns up the x-mas feels to a hundred.
